Things to Do in Boone, NC: Explore Horn in the West™ and Hickory Ridge History Museum

Looking for something unforgettable to do in Boone, NC? Just three minutes from Appalachian State University, Horn in the West™ and Hickory Ridge History Museum offer an experience unlike anything else in the High Country! Stories from the past come to life in the heart of downtown.

Horn in the West™: Boone’s Original Attraction, 74 Seasons Strong

Launched in 1952 as Boone’s very first tourism initiative, Horn in the West has become one of North Carolina’s longest-running summer traditions. Now entering its 74th season, this outdoor drama tells the story of the early Appalachian settlers during the American Revolution. Families risked everything for independence, survival, and community.

Set in the beautiful Daniel Boone Amphitheater, performances take place under the stars with dramatic battle scenes, moving family stories, and an unforgettable tribute to the region’s resilience. Whether you're a first-time guest or you grew up watching the show, Horn in the West™ continues to inspire generations.

Hickory Ridge History Museum: Where the Past Still Works

Right next door to the amphitheater, Hickory Ridge History Museum brings the 18th and early 19th centuries to life through six historic log cabins, including one estimated to have been built in 1785. Some of its logs could date back to the 1500s!

Visitors can experience open-hearth cooking, blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, and more through seasonal programming and special events. It’s a place where history is hands-on, and where every guest, whether local or just passing through, can experience the everyday life of early Watauga County residents.

Why These Sites Matter in 2026

As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, Horn in the West™ and Hickory Ridge History Museum remain vital parts of Boone’s cultural and historical landscape. They are powered by the Southern Appalachian Historical Association (SAHA), a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich stories of this region.

In a time when many historic sites face funding shortfalls, community support matters more than ever.
