Join us as we honor the service and sacrifice of our Nation’s Veterans—past and present—at this special commemorative event held on the grounds of Hickory Ridge History Museum.
The centerpiece of the day is a reenactment of the historic December 1780 Change of Command Ceremony, in which Major General Horatio Gates formally transferred leadership of the Southern Continental Army to Major General Nathanael Greene. This pivotal moment marked a turning point in Revolutionary War strategy and is brought to life by skilled historical interpreters.
Throughout the day, guests can explore a small Continental Army encampment, engage with ongoing living history demonstrations, and learn more about Revolutionary War genealogy and patriot heritage through booths hosted by the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution.
This is a family-friendly, educational experience designed to connect the public with the military and civilian stories that shaped the founding of our country.
Schedule Highlights:
Live historical reenactment of the Change of Command Ceremony
Revolutionary War encampment and demonstrations
Community partner exhibits from SAR and DAR chapters
Museum tours and hands-on history activities
We invite you to spend the day reflecting, learning, and honoring our veterans in the very mountains where history marched forward.
